Round, like a circle in a spiral....
Something happening over on planet Evo made me pen this somewhere else. Thought it worthwhile putting up here for reasons of catharsis. It's to do with my favourite chapter, Gen 1. ;-)
It starts off with three words that I wonder if we have ever actually wondered about: "In the Beginning".
When we are born, our mums and dads are already there. Sometimes their mums and dads are there too and they look after us until we get big enough to look after ourselves. And then maybe we meet someone and have children and look after them. In the meantime, we have started school - its all very scary but there are older children there who have seen it all before and perhaps we make friends with some of those older children but next years they go on to another school and are gone from our lives as we are gone from the lives of the younger children below us - it goes around in circles.
There are cycles everywhere we look - the circle of life - the water cycle - the carbon cycle (every cell in our body is replaced by different chemicals every 10 years or so - we literally are different people as well as changing mentally and spiritually and getting bigger, the actual fabric of our body changes too!) And what do all of these circles tell us? They lead us to believe that there will be no end just as it leads us to believe there was no beginning.
But in Genesis 1:1, it starts off by telling us that there was a "beginning". But it doesn't tell us what it was like. It is beyond our understanding. What was there? I don't really know, but I do know that the first four words are, "In the beginning God". We don't know what else was there in the beginning, but this passage tells us God was there.
And in the last book of the bible, "Revelations", there are four special living creatures in heaven. (Creature means something that was created - they weren't there in the beginning). They praise God like this: ""Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."
Holy three times, once for when he was - he was there in the beginning when there was nothing else - God really was holy then, you can't get much more holy than being the only being. Once for when He is... He is.. now. All the nows, yours, your mums, your grandmas, your childrens,... And he is holy - He is different from all of us. Holy means set apart - He is certainly that. And the third one is for when He is to come. Just as there was definitely a beginning - even though it seems like things have been going on for ever, there was a beginning, so also will there be an end - things will not go on for ever as they now are. But in the end to come, so God will also be there - just like he was there in the beginning.
And all the circles will end. The heartbreak of losing your friends to new schools, grandmas, granddads, mums and dads to disease and the sadness of knowing your children will lose you, that will all finish. And then we will know that....
In the End God....

well, i wish id gone out with you to the pub because you must have been well smashed when you wrote this
Yeah the spiral must have been the room spinning.
I'm in despair. Tell me you do know these classic lyrics.
nope i must admit i dont.
I know what a room spinning round feels like. Not today though I hasten to add.
Round
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel thats turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half-forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that you said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of a song
Half-remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
You were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Classic.
Terrible, but nonetheless, classic!
I hasten to add Dusty Springfield is not my cup of tea, and asking if Phil knows lyrics is asking if he has hair !!!!!! You should know by now he does not listen to music of any kind
Hmmm, an interesting musing. However, how does your faith explain that biblical scholars now believe that the book of Genesis wasn't actually dictated to Moses on Sinai, but written some 450 years after the 'event'? :-)
Faith isn't there to explain why scholars believe as they do!
Written reports of creation, fludde, exodus etc delayed, pending the invention of the pencil.
No, my faith doesn't explain it, it is their lack thereof which probably does that.
Since there are many prophesies in the OT which subsequently (and btw, even after the years you are suggesting) came true, people in the hope of disproving the hypothesis of God - such as Phil and I discussed (which have scientifically to date all had only the opposite effect) - have postulated their own hypotheses of how this could possibly come about.
The most obvious one of course being that it was written down after they happened rather than before. (This has of course really been messed up by the introduction of the New Testament - that pesky Jesus).
Here's what you should know, taken from a good biblcal scholar of today:
"The Pentateuch is thus depicted as a patchwork of stories, poems and lawsdating from the tenth to the fifth centuries BC. However, this view is not supported by conclusive evidence, and intensive archeological and literary research has tended to undermine many of the arguments used to challenge Mosaic authorship."
Of course, if Moses did write the Pentateuch (and I don't think I remember ever seeing in the bible anywhere that he claimed he did) but that would have been some considerable years after the events of this marvellous chapter anyway - the question is, do we have faith that the biblical writers were passing on wisdom from God - or where they just amusing themselves?
When the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness - no one else was there - how did the Gospel writers find out? Did Jesus brag about it? I think not.
Its fascinating to me to see peoples different interpretations of things. People of faith accept the book as the written word of God. People without faith see it as a bunch of stories, fables, and lessons put together some years later.
I fall into the latter :-)
I take it your question is thus answered.
If the world was created yesterday and all history is a mirage used to keep the people of today in their place, I would agree that the stories of the bible serve the purpose that you suppose.
But if it wasn't. If the early Christians really did lose their lives, their families and were thrown out of their communities for the what is written in here - and this of course includes the people who wrote the Gospels, (and this is not only recorded in the bible), then what possible gain did they have?
Taken to the logical conclusion, rather than a fleeting thought about what seems to be the case today.....
Does it what?
i think lucy has just explained perfectly there why i do not EVER listen to music of any description, and im sure there will be a few more here that are now thinking of joining me.
the day i am made prime minister, music will be the first thing i ban, closely followed by religion.
Just try! You can't stop a free man from whistling or a sad woman from crooning, and you can close a church building but you can't stop God.
now theres a lyric.......village people i believe, "you cant stop the music, nobody can stop the music"
"Jesus, You've put music in my soul" Matt Redman
(PS) and Abba had a similar idea
"without a song to sing what are we?
So i say thank you for the music,
for giving it to me"
(amen!)
well you can keep it, just dont share it with me.
I would have quite liked to have 'given it' to Agnitha (was that the blond one?) :-D
no mark, that was bjorn, but hey dont worry its no shame to be gay these days
it's true
everything is a circle
even the most fundamental parts of the universe are pictured as tiny vibrating circles
the beginning and the end are the same thing
it is the 'point' of inversion where all that IS becomes all that is not
seamlessly
but it's also true that a circle will turn and as it does, things that are happening in the now, will be imprinted on the loop
thus they have happened before, and will happen again, for as long as the circle spins
everything is made up of circles
that will never be perfect circles
because then they would stop moving
and they wouldn't exist
god is the infinite moment just before the inversion, and just after
the moment there was an imperfection in the circle
the moment it became an elipse
there was movement
a charge
a current
in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with god, and the Word was god
a basis for the trinity
but in simpler terms, a word is a vibration, and vibrations are caused by opposing forces
i may be boring you
so i'll stop with this
the symbol for "current":or energy being translated from one space to another, is... >>> I <<<
I: was the 'word'
"I am" is your password to endless possibilities in an infinite existence
everything is forever
Thanks I,
(tho isn't "I AM" more closely in English spelled - YHWH?)
